Hello!
I wanna start by saying sorry for not uploading a blog post in so long (has it been a year?!). It's just everything has got so exciting with my YouTube channel so I've started putting more time into my videos and forgot all about my blog. I need to remind myself that if I hadn't started my blog, I wouldn't have started a YouTube channel and got to the point I am with it now, with 10k subscribers (OMG!!). I love writing about different things and I wanna start uploading more blog posts as well as videos so if you enjoy them or have any requests let me know!
I thought for this particular blog post I would write about some of my favourite musicians because I get a lot of comments asking what kind of music I like.
I am constantly listing to music and finding new stuff all the time. My friend Zak actually made this FaceBook page where anyone can post a song they like which I thought was a really clever idea and I am really enjoying finding new stuff to listen to. I also found a lot of music I like through various movie soundtracks or youtube requested videos as well as my dads CD collection, which is where it all started really.
I would say the majority of music I like falls under the Rock/indie rock/pop rock or more calm rock genre but I also enjoy a bit of jazz every now and then and even electronic music but it really depends on my mood.
♥
So there are some of my favourite musicians, hope you like:
Amy Winehouse
If you know me well, you will know Amy Winehouse is one of my all-time favourite singers. My room is covered in posters and paintings of her and I've watched her documentary at least 50 times. What I love about amy's music is it's such a mix of jazz, blues, rhythm and soul which is really unique. All her songs are so genuine to her life as they are all written on things that were happening to her such as dealing with mental illness, her dad's affairs and her breakups. I just think her voice is so beautiful and I also love her pin-up influenced style. Its so sad that the world lost such an amazing artist but I feel like she was so talented and real that her music will live on.
Arctic Monkeys
Arctic Monkeys are one of my favourite english rock bands of all time. I discovered them when I was younger and my dad had the 'Favourite worst nightmare' CD playing and I fell in love with them (this is still probably my favourite album). I just feel like their music puts you in such a good mood or it's just really relatable. I also love Alex Turner's identifiable voice and I can't help but sing along in a northern accent. My best memory of my first year at college was seeing Arctic Monkeys play at Finsbury park with other bands like Tame Impala and Royal blood, they're just as great live.
Radiohead
Another one of my favourite english rock bands is Radiohead. I always kind of knew about Radiohead growing up as again, my dad was always playing them and showed me some anomated music videos which were pretty trippy and confusing for a child to understand. However, around my second year of college I really started getting into them and brought a few of their albums such as In Rainbows (very calm, slower rock), Hail to the Thief (kinda dark, more rocky) and OK Computer (their most well known one) and I fell in love with them and I now listen to them on a regular basis. They have also just brought out some songs from their new album which I think are really cool.
Warpaint
If you like kind of indie rock/flowy/dreamy music you will bloody love Warpaint. Again, this takes me back to my first year of college because I discovered them through my friend Chelsea and we went to The Dome in Brighton to see them after that year. Some of there stuff is so beautiful and calm and some stuff is more dancy. They are amazing live and they have a great style. My 3 favourite songs I recommend you look up are 'Undertow', 'Love is to Die' and 'Baby'.
The Libertines
Another band I love (most of my music seems to be English rock bands haha!) are The Libertines. I love their old stuff but I am much more familiar with their most recent album 'Anthems for Doomed Youth' which has one of my favourite songs at the moment 'You're my Waterloo' which is a really sweet song and I love it. I would say if you like bands like Arctic Monkeys then you would probably enjoy the Libertines too, I think they're great.
David Bowie
I couldn't not add this legend to my music favourites. I am so devastated that Bowie passed away this year and I can't express how much I love him in words. He is so talented and so iconic and has had so many different styles. I feel like Bowie sort of invented the persona of a singer becoming a character or dressing in expressive/artsy outfits and I can tell a lot of musicians have been inspired by him like Lady GaGa for example, who has gone through stages of wearing mad outfits and becoming a character on stage too. I have watched endless amounts of Bowie interviews and his movies with my dad (who again, got me into Bowie from a very young age). Bowie is actually the only musician who I have ever cried over their death. I actually did my photography A2 project on anti-fashion and included Bowie into my essay as he was a big influence to the punk fashion movement. He is so talented, clever and iconic, he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest musicians.
The Strokes
The Stokes are an American rock band from New York. The album I know best is 'Is This It' which has some of my favourite ever songs on there like 'Hard to Explain' and 'Last Night'. I just think this album in particular is really good to play at parties or even just have on in the background when you're in your bedroom. I really love The Stokes and I just think they're so cool.
Melanie Martinez
Melanie is a fairly new discovery for me, I think my friend Ellen introduced me to her music about half a year ago now. When I was showed her songs and music videos, I fell in love with her. I would say her style is really cutsey and kind of punk-inspired and her music videos are so crazy and interesting. She mostly writes about her home-life but a lot of her lyrics revolve around childish elements like dolls and child's games but in a darker, spookier way to metaphorically reflect what she was going through as a child. I am just so interested and intrigued by her music and style and she is so original and unique. I don't usually listen to much pop/alternative pop but I am obsessed with her album 'Cry Baby' and I think she is a very talented lady.
The Stone Roses
Yet again, here is another English Rock band which I love. I really got into The Stone Roses at college, particularly The Stone Roses album including some of my favourites like 'I Wanna Be Adored' and 'She Bangs The Drums'. When I went up to Manchester to look at the Art Uni with my mum, we were just listening to 'Fools Gold' all the way up as we got into the Manchester vibes (we also went on the Coronation Street Tour - not as cool)I just love this band so much and I think all there songs are so well written and they are just really talented.
Daughter
I have always really loved Daughter since I was about 14/15. I recently went to go see them at the same venue I saw Warpaint and they are incredible live. I would say their music is kind of folk rock/indie rock and is quite calm and dreamy, similar to Warpaint. I like all their albums so it's hard to pin down my favourite ones. They are also such lovely people in person and sort of shy and sweet.
The Smiths
The majority of people I know love The Smiths because they are so timeless and recognisable, like if 'This Charming Man' came on at a party, everyone in the room would be so happy and want to dance. I really got into the Smiths again whilst being at college, particularly in my second and third year because a lot of my close friendship group at college is into them too. I feel like you can listen to The Smiths if you're sad or happy because theres so much variety in their songs and they always lift me up when I'm feeling down. (PS if you've watched the episode of Fresh Meat where Oregan gets dumped so they play The Smiths while putting images of cats on the TV screen, this would definitely be my ideal way to get cheered up).
Cage The Elephant
I saw Cage The Elephant in February with Oli, Joe, Zak and some of the rest of the gang when their new album came out 'Tell me I'm Pretty'. I think they are just so cool as people as well as there music. I recommend listening to 'Melophobia' which is probably my favourite album next to their most recent one. The concert was definitely one of the highlights of 2016 so far for me. I had never been in such a big mosh pit in my life and at one point I actually had to go to the back but then I thought 'No! I don't want to miss out, I just have to embrace it and become a mosher' and I really enjoyed the rest of the night, even though I had never sweated so much in my life, haha!
Blondie
Blondie is definitely one of my original favourites. Her music really takes me back to my childhood when I lived in a little flat by Brighton Beach with my mum. I remember always saying how much I loved Blondie when I was about 4 and I still love Blondie's music to this day. I always used to ask my mum to put 'Tide is High' as a little girl and I would wrap myself in fairy lights and dance around the living room (I was a strange child haha!).
Catfish And The Bottlemen
Catfish and The Bottlemen are yet another english rock/indie rock band. I love their music so much and it was literally on my bucket list to see them live. A few weeks ago my friend Lily rang me up and she had won tickets to go see them in Camden (my favourite city!) that night and I was so so happy! They are so mad live and like Cage the Elephant, there was a lot of moshing but it was so worth it. I like their range of music as some stuff can be really sweet, calm rock like 'Hourglass' and some stuff can be so much more 'rockier' (if thats a word??)like 'Pacifier' or 'Tryants', which I just rock out in my bedroom to.
The kills
The last one I am going to write about are a band called 'The kills'. I have only recently got into The Kills over the last few months but I can safely say they are already one of my favourites. Me and my boyfriend Oli are hopefully going to a music festival in Sweden in August called 'Way Out West' and I saw The Kills were going to be playing so I started listening to them and now i'm addicted. I especially like their new stuff on their 'Ash & Ice' album but there old stuff like 'Tape Song' is really cool too.
♥
So there are quite a few musicians that I listen to on a regular basis. I get a lot of comments on my YouTube videos when I mention music about what kind of stuff I'm into and I think it's easier to just write it all down rather then reply individually to each comment. I really enjoyed writing about all the music I like and hopefully it's helped you to discover some new stuff or just get an insight to the kind of music I like.
I really hope you liked this blog post and I really enjoyed sitting down with a coffee and writing about all the music I liked and finding the images. It was quite fun going through my iTunes and choosing my favourites!
Hopefully see you soon, make sure to leave your recommendations for my next blog post, lots of love,
Charlie xoxo
